Visit Data

Visit data, like other types of geospatial data, gives you detailed information about the number of visitors to a certain area over a specific period of time. It is used by real estate developers to predict their next development areas, and retailers to track consumer movement.

The Ultimate Guide to Visit Data 2020

Learn everything about Visit Data. Understand data sources, popular use cases, and data quality.

What is Visit Data?

Visit data is similar to other sub-categories of geospatial data. It tells you the number of visitors to a specific place, area or landmark. This could be anything from the local shopping to a national monument. Much of this information is also covered by POI visitation and foot traffic datasets. A visit dataset can give you detailed visitor information, such as how many people came to visit over a specific period of time, how long they stayed for or even visitor demographics.

How is Visit Data collected?

There are 2 main ways of collecting visit data:
Geolocation data - one source of visit data is by using geolocation data. This can track how many people are in one area at a certain time by counting the number of devices, but although it is more frequently updated than on-site data it is often less accurate because geolocating is not always spot-on.
On-site data collection - visit data can also be collected on-site by measuring how many people pass through manually or recording numerical values, say the number of cars parked at the location or the number of visitors who bought tickets to an attraction. This method is fairly accurate and comprehensive because it comes from first-hand experience but it is also less efficient because it takes a long time to collect and process and is often more costly.

What are the attributes of Visit Data?

Typically visit data will provide information about the location visited - think coordinates, location, name, function etc. More importantly it will give you visitor information, such as how many people visited, when and whether they made a repeat visit at a later date. A visit dataset might also give you information on visitor demographics, such as gender or age.
Details about the location itself can be important, because unlike POI visitation datasets, visit data can be any location anywhere and so might not necessarily be a landmarked place. From there, you can work out why people are visiting and tailor marketing or business schemes around this information.

What is Visit Data used for?

Public institutions and private companies use visit data to learn more detailed information about different locations and the people who visit. This allows them to improve their visitors’ experience of the location.
Some organizations use visit data to study the public’s behavioral trends, while businesses can use this data to track their in-store progress and compare it to competitors.
Local governments can also use visit data to evaluate the popularity of public places and monuments and assess their performance.
Developers can use visit data to determine or predict areas of high traffic or foot traffic to work out where to locate their next project. If an area is suddenly gaining popularity amongst the generation about to hop on the property ladder, it would make sense to try to build a development there.

How can a user assess the quality of Visit Data?

The best visit datasets will provide real-time or regularly updated visitation data so you can have the most comprehensive overview of different POIs visitation performance. Historical visitation records are also often useful as you can see trends in the public’s behaviour and use this effectively. Always make sure to read the data provider’s reviews before buying any visit data and you should ask for a data sample before you purchase to ensure that their data is the right fit for your needs.
