Successful radio campaigns with targeted weather data (Swiss Radioworld)

Swiss Radioworld is a marketing company specialising in advertising and planning of radio advertising campaigns (classic/ digital) for advertising spaces in Switzerland and is majority owned by Goldbach Group AG.

Challenge
It comes as no surprise that weather conditions have a huge influence on consumer behavior whether that be increased demand for ice cream on a hot summer day or for umbrellas and scarves in the depths of winter. So, for targeted sales campaign planning, whatever the product, factoring in accurate weather data is becoming increasingly necessary to drive successful sales campaigns and give your business the competitive edge.

Solution
With event-based radio advertising, the relevant product promotions are broadcast depending on the current weather, and retailers are able to match those weather criteria to the desired promotions in advance. That allows sun glasses and hay fever remedies to be promoted when it is hot and sunny, and cheese fondue and mulled wine when it is cold and wet.

Result
As the desire for a hearty cheese fondue gradually increases as temperatures drop, whenever a weather permits, a commercial for cheese products has been broadcast fully automatically at the radio stations, which means that the ad was broadcast only at the relevant time.

Improved forecast quality due to vehicle data (Daimler)

Challenge
Modern cars continuously evolve into rolling computers and meter besides the motor performance and further technical quantities also the temperature outside the car. These measurements are used for optimised regulations of the air conditioning but also as source of information for drivers. One question arises naturally: Which potential does the data hold beyond these applications when it comes to enhancing the forecast quality of various weather products?

Solution
Temperature measurements can on the one hand be used as ground truth for the assimilation into numerical weather prediction models and on the other hand serve as database to define current conditions but also to enhance nowcasting systems. In the frame of a research project, the benefit of the assimilation of these measurements for different forecast horizons and parameters were examined using high resolution weather model calculations. In addition, concepts with the focus on road safety were developed and tested.

Result
The research results provide concrete insights into the influence of the temperature measurements on both the forecast quality of numerical weather prediction models and road safety relevant conditions and nowcast products. In a nutshell, explicit conclusions on the value and potential of the temperature measurements of the Daimler vehicle fleet were successfully gained.

HäschCash - Weather API helps you save money (St. Galler Kantonalbank)

Challenge
Wether we are in a bus, watching TV, checking our social media platforms or magazines, we are run over by ads for new products what grabs deep in our wallets as well. Especially, the unlimited possibilities make it difficult to say no and save some money. Moreover, a certain degree of discipline and an adequate method are needed in order to put some money aside every month.

Solution
The St. Gallen cantonal bank developed a saving app called HäschCash that enables their customers to save money simply and digitally. From a multitude of saving methods, one can be chosen that helps reaching the saving goals. If somebody lacks the necessary motivation, they can leave the decision to save money to the occurrence of a certain event. Thanks to the weather data of Meteomatics the saving methods “Schmuddelwetter” and “Happy Day” are available that link the weather to the saving goals.

Result
Due to variety of data connectors of the API the meteorological data is easily integrated into the app which enables weather-based saving methods. Whether sunshine or continuous rain – individually determined money amounts can be saved thanks to highly accurate weather data. Hence, a beautiful day in the sun can get even more beautiful as with the method “Happy Day” the balance rises at the same time.

The Weather API helps SBB to enhance their railway operations (Swiss Federal Railways)

Challenge
Weather impacts a railway provider`s daily business in many ways. The number of travellers is highly dependent on local weather conditions and for the railway network to be able to operate at a higher frequency requires more precise planning for both schedule and increased energy consumption.

Solution
The Meteomatics Weather API provides precise hyper-local forecasts for all relevant meteorological parameters along a specific route. By downloading that data and overlaying it with the energy consumption along a route, the Swiss Federal Railways, SBB, was able to align the energy consumption of their trains with the local weather conditions like wind, ice and dew. As a result of this success the API is now in the process of being integrated throughout the whole railway service from the planning of snow ploughing and tracking heating to the tourism advertisements.

Result
Using Meteomtics´ meteorological know-how and the API, the business assumptions about what causes variations in energy consumption could be validated. Now, the API is becoming more and more integrated into the daily operations, allowing SBB to improve operational planning, reduce costs for on-call services, and to operate the railway more efficiently.

The Weather API provides helps water utilities create innovative services (Anglian Water Services)

Challenge
Anglian Water Services wanted to breathe new life into their innovation processes, to develop a pipeline of new services and at the same time rationalise their sources of weather data from many down to one single view of the truth. They also wanted the data to be made simply available in formats that would work with existing products and services whilst meeting the needs of their newly formed Data Science team.

Solution
The Weather API was put in place across the whole Anglian Water Services business. With individual accounts in place the various business units have easy access to the data they require and integration with 3 rd party catchment modeling and visualisation tools has been straightforward. Providing consultancy around meteorological data use has also been highly valued and enabled Meteomatics to contribute directly to a variety of innovation projects.

Result
Anglian Water Services have made significant savings in terms of weather data costs, streamlined from 20 down to one supplier and are now benefiting from quick and easy access to weather data for their date science team as they develop innovative solutions with their Alliance partners for the benefit of business and its customers.

The Weather API provides access to weather data for best routing (Tshwane University of Technology)

Challenge
Among the many international solar vehicle challenges, the in South Africa based Sasol Solar Challenge is one of the most notorious as the rout offers unique and challenging geographical characteristics. Moreover, the rare race and its aim to cover the furthest distance possible in eight days is extraordinary as most solar vehicle challenges race between two distinct points.

Solution
Meteomatics provided the perfect solution by being able to supply the required forecasted weather parameters in different resolutions. The data is integrated through a user-friendly API directly into the programming language, in this case MATLAB, used by the team to optimize their route. Along with the already used weather parameters in this project, there are many more, such as air density variation along the route in order to calculate aerodynamic drag components, that might prove to be advantageous for the race.

Result
The Sun Chaser III team from Tshwane University of Technology believes that by making use of the Meteomatics’ API at the Sasol Solar Challenge 2018 will provide the accuracy in weather prediction needed in the competition. Especially, the team’s energy estimation will profit from this technologically enhanced advantage what results in a better performance during the race.
